The Punchbowl Inn, Churchtown

Welcome to the page on our Website dedicated to our Sporting compatriates from the South Coast of England.

You may think of Devon folk as being Cider drinking Softies but we know different. Our first excursion to the land of the Donkey was on the 31st March 2006. And from those who made the trip we would like to say a very special thank you to Dave and Marj from the Keyberry Hotel in Newton Abbot. Also a big-up to the one and only Derek Ellis, Liz and Charlotte and of course Mr C Hopper (sorry Chopper).

  1. Some locals may know the Keyberry as the home of "Newton Abbot Swing", we obviously mis-understood this terminology, apparantley "Swing" is a 50's dance craze!!

The reason for visiting Devon is of course because it is the home of our very own Steve Allen (who Devonshire people call "Slugger"), Steve was an excellent host for our first visit to Newton Abbot and he made sure we were well looked after and in beer for the whole weekend. As we are "All round Sportsmen" we held a Golf Competition on Saturday 1st April at Dainton Park Golf Course just south west of Newton Abbot. The competition was fierce with red hot local favourite "Slugger" proving too hot for the rest (even off 5 handicap). The Padster played superb and was best of the rest finishing one point behind Steve. Shot of the day (and most definately Sports Performance of the Week) Was Nigel "Cinders" Bury's tee shot on the 12th hole, it was a straight drive down the middle of the fairway which is broken by a pond at around 150 yards, in the middle of the pond were two Swans, now the rest you can work our yourself but one of these little Swans was wishing he had H51N when he saw Nigels golf ball pierce the water about 8 inches from its asre, quality!

Saturday night was spent playing Bingo in the local pubs in Newton Abbot followed by a supper at Chippies Plaice.

Sunday the 2nd of April was supposed to be Horse Racing at the local Racecourse but the Southeners felt a few drops of rain during the week before and cancelled the meet. It didn't stop Slutchy wearing his "Racing Suit" (and no it didn't make him go any faster!). We made our way home in the Boogie Bus.

Our little white Bus proved to be excellent transport for the weekend and the modifications by Jingles and Derek were superb.

So keep watching this page for more expoilts from the South Coast. Hopefully we can bring you results from Choppers Gardening Club (Sunday night Pool League).
